George Leslie Barbee

My first notice of GEORGE LESLIE BARBEE came when I stumbled across a widows application for a pension by MARGARET E. BARBEE.

In 1901 a Margaret W. Barbee applied for a widows pension from the State of North Carolina. Last name Barbee made me start looking. The Application is shown below and we do not know if any pension was ever received. I think it make have been denied due to incorrect data given. Oh, I will explain.

These images can be found at familysearch.org.

Notice in the application that George served in Comp. G, 1st Reg N. C. State Troops. This is at the top of the application. Now look down to where Mr. A. H. Scott signed, the handwriting is such that 1st may have looked like 10 t. Since Margaret could not write and  her reading skills may have been limited also and no one noticed on the second page the Civil War Unit was listed as Company G, 10th Regiment of NC State Troops.

Sad to say that most of the people who signed were ancestors of mine and D. C Gunter was a Magistrate Judge, in Durham, and no one noticed the mistake. This mistake sent me looking for George in the Civil War. There he is, NOT in the 10th, but in the 1st Regiment.

Now to find out more about George, I look in the BARBEE BOOK.

In the BARBEE BOOK the first sighting of George Barbee is on page 69 -

He is listed as the son of Abimalec and Elizabeth Barbee.

The only other reference to George is on page 146 -

Here again the information is INCORRECT. His marriage was the 22 Dec 1857 and George died on 8 Sep 1862. This could be a typo error, maybe not.

In ABIMALEC BARBEE'S Will George is mentioned

Now we know who George is and what happened to him. What about his wife and children? Where are they and what happened to them. Margaret is still alive in 1901 and according to the 1900 census she is a widow living in Durham with her sister Jane Luter.

The BARBEE BOOK has a few other incorrect entries here ...
page 69 is the first one that is a whooper ....

This entry has Ellen Luter as the daughter of BARBEE  and GILLY (BYRD) LEWTER. Was she?? Yes and the Lewter Family Tree is posted on this site. So you can go and browse through. Barbee's and Lewter families are old families from this part of North Carolina and you are apt to find many connections, through many generations.

Also posted with the Lewter Family Tree is BARBEE LEWTER'S will and the probate of that will.

Ellen was mention one more time in the BARBEE BOOK on page 200

On page 200 and 201 in the BARBEE BOOK you will find work of Mrs. Belle Lewter West was doing for a book that she hope to write on the Lewters.

George Barbee did not leave a will, but his estate was probated. You will find all the papers in that estate at familysearch.org in the Estate Records of North Carolina.

George and Ellen had two children, Joseph C and James Robert. In 1860 the census does not show a George or a Less Barbee, but there is a Less Baker in Wake county that may be our family. There is a Les Baker and Margaret with a Joseph and Marcus. (James was not born until 1861). More than likely this is George and Ellen, farming and starting a family.

Joseph most likely died before 1910, but James married and had a family. He married a Julia Oliver and had four children. You can find them all in the Lewter Family Tree.

Margaret Ellen Lewter Barbee died in Virginia on the 20 November 1922. You can find her listed in the Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia. If you go to findagrave.com you will find a photo of her tombstone.
